Hi crab guy :) your blog is awesome! i notice that you do handline crabbing and i am very new to crabbing. so i'm planning a trip to go crabbing this weekend in brooklyn, new york and was wondering how i should set up my line and what are the basic to hand line crabbing. thank you for your time in everything and wish you the best crabbing season yet!
Nice informative videos. I tried blue crabbing for the first time last spring near Charleston, South Carolina. I had no such luck but we only stayed with it for about an hour at a boat launch. Do you have a preference to when time of day to go crabbing? In other words does the tide make a huge difference?
Hey, nice catch! I live in Maryland and have not seen a day pulling in crabs like that! I will be making my way down to Topsail Island in about 2 1/2 weeks. I hope the crabbing is good there :) I will be testing the Soundside park area to see if i can get into any good crabs. I hope they are hungry.
Hey Crab Guy! I am truely Impressed! We come down every year and stay at Emerald Isle, and cant find a decent place to catch crabs. I typically throw back the females because that is what I was taught to do, so that leaves me with very little left over. maybe two to three every two days, and thats using a crab pot! do you have any suggestions for locations near Emerald Isle location? or should I just bite the bullet and come all the way inland? Thanks, Susan
There's a little dock on the end of the road by the Sheridan on the sound side that has some descent crabbing in Pine Knoll Shores. I think it's Pelican dr. Not sure. Ask at the gas station there where the boat ramp is. You crab on the end of the dock. I have also done very well right off the Bogue Inlet pier using traps. I never knew until then crabbing was so good in the ocean. Blue crabs too not just calico crabs. Good Luck! And let me know how you make out :)
Hi. I've done a lot of crabbing in the seattle area (red rock and big dungeness). What are the rules like in North Carolina? How many ring traps can you use? How long is the season? Awesome blog and recipes.
You can keep 50 crabs a day over 5". As far as I know attended traps or other methods eg. hand lining has no restrictions. Overnight traps have limits and rules for both private and commercial use. Crabbing picks up around the first of June and can last into mid fall. Hope you get to try it someday!
Hi, Great Blog. I am planning to come this summer for a week and have never been to this area before. Where would you recommend I stay to give me the most options to crab? Follow on question of course any guidance on places I should try would be a great help.
Hello Gray I was wondering were a good shot to go crabbing with my children We have triedUnion Point and maybe got 4 crabs all day . I am trying to teach my children how to live by there own catches and I don't know of a good shot and what time or year can you help me with this matter Thank you so much May God Bless !
Union Point can be a bit finicky. I've had days with over 40 crabs and others with 2. The wind plays a good deal with crabbing around here due to a very slight or non-existant tide. I also find early to mid June the best times to crab but have been surprised more than once other times from May through November. Best bet is to have a back up for dinner and if you hit the crabs good then cook the back up the next night.
